New granular rock-analogue materials for simulation of multi-scale fault and fracture processes

In this study, we present a new granular rock-analogue material (GRAM) with a dynamic scaling suitable for the simulation of fault and fracture processes in analogue experiments. Dynamically scaled experiments allow the direct comparison of geometrical, kinematical and mechanical processes between model and nature. The geometrical scaling factor defines the model resolution, which depends on the density and cohesive strength ratios of model material and natural rocks. Granular materials such as quartz sands are ideal for the simulation of upper crustal deformation processes as a result of similar nonlinear deformation behaviour of granular flow and brittle rock deformation. We compared the geometrical scaling factor of common analogue materials applied in tectonic models, and identified a gap in model resolution corresponding to the outcrop and structural scale (1–100 m). The proposed GRAM is composed of quartz sand and hemihydrate powder and is suitable to form cohesive aggregates capable of deforming by tensile and shear failure under variable stress conditions. Based on dynamical shear tests, GRAM is characterized by a similar stress–strain curve as dry quartz sand, has a cohesive strength of 7.88 kPa and an average density of 1.36 g cm−3. The derived geometrical scaling factor is 1 cm in model = 10.65 m in nature. For a large-scale test, GRAM material was applied in strike-slip analogue experiments. Early results demonstrate the potential of GRAM to simulate fault and fracture processes, and their interaction in fault zones and damage zones during different stages of fault evolution in dynamically scaled analogue experiments.

We compared sepsis “time zero” and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) SEP-1 pass rates among 3 abstractors in 3 hospitals. Abstractors agreed on time zero in 29 of 80 (36%) cases. Perceived pass rates ranged from 9 of 80 cases (11%) to 19 of 80 cases (23%). Variability in time zero and perceived pass rates limits the utility of SEP-1 for measuring quality.

A significant fraction (~ 30%) of the gamma-ray sources detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope is still of unknown origin, being not yet associated with counterparts at lower energies. Many unidentified gamma-ray sources (UGSs) could be blazars, the largest identified population of extragalactic gamma-ray sources and the rarest class of active galactic nuclei. In particular, it has been found that blazars occupy a defined region in WISE three dimensional color space, well separated from that occupied by other sources in which thermal emission prevails. For farther sources with weaker IR emission, additional informations can be obtained combining WISE data with X-ray or radio emission. Alternatively, the low-frequency radio emission can be used for identifying potential gamma-ray candidate blazars. However, optical spectroscopic observations represent the tell-tale tool to confirm the exact nature of these sources. To this end, an extensive observational campaign has been performed with several optical telescopes, aimed at pinpointing the exact nature of gamma-ray candidate blazars selected with the different selection methods mentioned above. The results of this campaign lead to the discovery of 60 new gamma-ray blazars, thus confirming the effectiveness of these selection criteria.

The First Byurakan Survey (FBS) is the largest spectral survey in the Northern sky. One can select objects by color, broad absorption and emission lines, and SED; classify and investigate them. The digitization of the FBS is aimed at making a DFBS database available for the astronomical community. Besides scanning, we are creating plate solutions, extraction software, wavelength and flux calibration, templates for different types of objects, numerical classification, a catalog of objects, a database of spectra, a user interface and a DFBS web page. New research projects based on the DFBS are possible, including a search for new QSOs and other AGN, a continuation of the second part of FBS, and identifications of radio, IR and X-ray sources. The DFBS database will be available at the end of 2004.

We present some preliminary results of a BeppoSAX observation of the pulsar PSR B1509–58. We discuss in detail the spectrum energy distribution and show that the high energy data can be explained by a steepening continuum spectrum.

The Crab Pulsar(PSR 0531+21) was observed by the four Narrow Field Instruments on board the Italian-Dutch satellite BeppoSAX on August and September 1996, during the Science Verificado Phase. The fine time resolution (15 μs) and the high statistic of the data provided phase histogram of very good quality, well suited for phase resolved spettroscopy over the entire energy band (0.1-300 keV) covered by BeppoSAX payload. In this contribution we present preliminary results of the spectra distribution of the peaks and the inter peak region. Moreover, we also carried out a detailed analysis of the P1 shape and the behaviour of the P2/P1 ratio with the energy.

Summary
Abstract
We report new measurements of the BL Lac object ON 231 (W Com) from radio to optical wavelengths. This source was found to be at its highest brightness in the near IR and optical bands for many years.
Introduction
ON 231 is one of the targets in the observational programme in the near IR that we have been carrying out since 1986 at the 1.5 m Italian IR Telescope at Gornergrat (TIRGO, 3150 m a.s.l.). The results of the measurements performed up to the spring of 1988 are given in. At the beginning of February 1992 we found the source in the highest state for about 20 years and therefore, in addition to the IR and optical measurements, we observed ON 231 at radio frequencies to obtain a more complete picture of its spectral distribution. Radio observations were carried out with the 32 m dish of Istituto di Radioastronomia (CNR - Bologna, Medicina) at a frequency of 22.2 GHz.
Results
The results of the new measurements are presented in Fig. 1 (open circles) together with those of Landau et al. performed in the spring 1983 (crosses). Some remarkable facts are evident: i) the flux in the near IR and optical bands in 1992 is generally higher than in 1983; ii) at variance with the above, the flux at 22.2 GHz does not show a significant change with respect to the previous measurement; iii) the maximum power emitted by ON 231 in the high state lies between 250 and 500 THz, while in 1983 it was at a lower frequency, likely below 100 THz; iv) the spectral slopes in the optical and near IR bands are flatter when the luminosity is higher.

The results of several photometric campaigns (1986–1993) in the near IR of the six bright BL Lac objects 3C 66A, PKS 0422+004, PKS 0735+178, PKS 0754+100, PKS 0829+046 and OQ 530 are presented. The observations were carried out at the 1.5 m Italian IR Telescope at Gornergrat (TIRGO − 3150 m a.s.l.) equipped with a IR photometer using a InSb detector cooled at the solid nitrogen temperature and the standard J, H, K filters. The principal aims of our program are the search of rapid variability (typical time scales of 1 day or less) and of correlations between the flux level (typically in the J band, where the largest variation amplitude is found) and the spectral slope. In the following we summarize some relevant results.

We describe an X-ray polarimeter which will be flown on the SPECTRUM-X-Gamma mission. The instrument exploits three distinct physical processes to measure polarization: Bragg reflection from a graphite crystal, Thomson scattering from a metallic lithium target, and photoemission from a Cesium Iodide photocathode. These three processes allow polarization measurements over an energy band of 0.3 keV to 12 keV. The polarimeter will make possible sensitive measurements of several hundred known X-ray sources. X-ray polarization measurements will allow us to constrain the geometry of gas flow in X-ray binaries, identify nonthermal emission in supernova remnants, test current models for X-ray emission in radio pulsars, determine the radiation mechanisms in active galactic nuclei, and search for inertial frame dragging (Lense-Thirring effect) around the putative black hole in Cygnus X-1.
